Thank you so much for coming to my presentation this week. I hope you learned a few things and have some good ideas for ways you can use some of the technologies we discussed to better engage your ELL students. Remember, it is not about the APPs, it is about the Application! How do you plan to apply some of these ideas to help your English Language Learners?

Before We Got Started
As you came in, you likely noticed some Legos. I asked you to Lego Your Imagination and build something. More specifically I asked you to build a duck (No worries, chances are we tied that to content later). However, to figure out what you were supposed to do, I asked you to scan a QR Code. If you didn’t have a QR code scanner, I likely recommended i-nigma (My personal favorite). Not sure how I created that QR code for the instructions? Click here, QR Stuff is a great tool for making any internet link into a QR Code. It is also a great tool for differentiating content in your classroom. Need to be in more than one place at one time? QR code can be your buddy.
Now that you have a QR code scanner, feel free to scan this code to follow along in today’s presentation.

Jenny’s Number – “Paper Is Not Dead” was the starter video we used to spark some conversation on teaching and learning preferences and how our expectations for learning continue to evolve. For example, should we take notes on computer or by hand? Should we be taking notes at all? What has recent research had to say about lecturing?
“The impact of these data should be like the Surgeon General’s report on “Smoking and Health” in 1964–they should put to rest any debate about whether active learning is more effective than lecturing.“

Mark Prensky’s on Digital Immigrants & YouTube is the Literacy of the 21st Century
Although it is a very difficult thing for many educators and other people to hear and face, and strange as it sounds, the truth is that for most people in the twenty-first century reading and writing are not the best ways to communicate.
According to Allan J. Kimmel, we can thank professors Jan Kietzmann and Ian Angell for the term.

The RICOH THETA S is a camera with two hemispherical lenses that allows users to shoot pictures with a 360 degree perspective. Users essentially take spherical images or movies in one shot that can be easily loaded up to the web and shared with others. In the space below, I will place a group shot from our session today, but if you simply can’t wait until then, here is a sample shot by Dana in California.

According to Sir Arthur Clarke
Clarke’s first law
When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
Clarke’s second law
The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
Clarke’s third law
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
