Note: This is a sample assignment to demonstrate how Websites and Pocket can make learning/reading easy for 21st Century students.
The future of reading and writing?
So what do we do? Should educators, and society, continue to struggle – valiantly but mostly in vain – to make every person in our society literate, in the old, reading and writing sense? Or should we accept that that is a war we will not win and move on to a different, and more useful, goal?
Warning If you are a person who is tied, body and soul, to reading and writing as the form of communication, do not – repeat do not – read this. Skip to several paragraphs down. Read on only if you are open to new points of view. Although it is a very difficult thing for many educators and other people to hear and face, and strange as it sounds, the truth is that for most people in the twenty-first century reading and writing are not the best ways to communicate.
Your Assignment:
The short passage above comes from an article on the importance of YouTube written in 2009 by Mark Prensky, the man who coined the terms “Digital Natives – Digital Immigrants.” Your mission is to find the article in our library (Citation Below). Then, find the part of the article discussing the future of reading and writing (Remember: Ctrl F). Finally, read how Mark illustrates his point about Youtube being the future of reading and writing? Was he right? As part of your entrance ticket to class, write down three of his examples and come ready to discuss.

Listening to articles in pocket is great for auditory learners!
Pocket was founded in 2007 by Nate Weiner to help people save interesting articles, videos and more from the web for later enjoyment. Once saved to Pocket, the list of content is visible on any device — phone, tablet or computer. It can be viewed while waiting in line, on the couch, during commutes or travel — even offline. Pocket is integrated into more than 1500 apps including Flipboard, Twitter and Zite. It is available for major devices and platforms including iPad, iPhone, Android, Mac, Kindle Fire, Kobo, Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Windows.
Now, my favorite feature of Pocket is its ability to convert Text To Speech, in other words, you can have your pocket articles read to you while working out, driving to class, riding on an airplane…wherever! This is a really great student/teacher trick to know for those of us looking for ways to be more productive. It is especially great for auditory learners. Check out the video below.
